Title: Advanced Material Lab Technician
Type: Internship
Rate Range: $3000-$4000/month
Expected time commitment: 3 months; 30 hr/wk

About Us

Homeostasis is pioneering advanced carbon conversion technology that transforms industrial CO2 emissions into valuable carbon materials. Using our innovative molten carbonate electrolysis process, we convert CO2 from atmospheric and emission sources into high-value products like graphite and carbon nanotubes. These materials have critical applications in energy storage, particularly as anode materials in Li-ion batteries. We're building strong relationships with leading industry partners to integrate our technology into their production processes, enabling a circular carbon economy while addressing domestic supply chain needs for advanced battery materials.

The Role

We are seeking an Advanced Materials Lab Technician to join our technical team in  conducting experiments with our novel molten carbonate electrochemical reactors. In this position, you’ll work closely with Dr. Julien Lombardi, Co-founder and CTO of Homeostasis, on converting CO2 into solid carbon materials. You'll be responsible for operating and maintaining our benchtop electrochemical reactors while documenting experimental results. This role requires experience in laboratory settings with an emphasis on careful execution of experimental procedures and rigorous data collection. Lab safety is of utmost importance, so following best practices is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carrying out standard operating procedures of Homeostasis electrochemical reactors.

  • Contribute to design of future experiments to help with scientific discovery.

  • Precise and safe operation of high temperature corrosive electrochemical reactions.

  • Thorough data collection of temperature, voltage, current, gas pressure, flow rate, and concentration over time.

  • Help design the automation of data collection.

  • Support material characterization and quality assessment.

  • Thorough experimental lab reports documenting all findings from experiments.

  • Supporting the interpretation of results and translating these results to the Engineering team for larger scale system design & operating parameters.

  • Maintenance of the lab working area and of Homeostasis reactors.

Qualifications

  • Required:

    • Pursuing a BS, MS, or Ph. D in Chemistry, Physics, or related field.

    • 1-3 years of experience working in a research lab.

    • Experience working with concentrated acids (such as HCl and H2SO4) and bases (such as NaOH, KOH)

    • Ability to clearly communicate scientific results and findings through written reports.

    • Experience working with spreadsheets and managing large amounts of data.

    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to laboratory safety.

    • Located in, or willing to relocate to, New York City.

    • Authorization to work in the United States.

  • Highly Desired:

    • 1-3 years of experience working in electrochemistry.

    • Knowledge of programming data collection with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

    • Experience in setting up  and controlling electrochemical cells.

    • 1-3 years of experience working in electrochemistry, and/or materials chemistry synthesis and characterization.

    • Experience working with high temperature corrosive chemistry.

    • Experience working with controlling gas flow rates and pressures.

    • Experience in characterizing solid crystalline materials using XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, TEM, and TGA.

    • Experience analyzing gas head space samples using GCMS.

The Ideal Candidate

You’re someone who likes to work with your hands and make new things. You are creative in your problem solving and aren’t afraid to tackle complex issues that arise. You enjoy working and collaborating with a team of talented, driven technical professionals. You’re passionate about making an impact on climate research. Most importantly, you are willing to learn and develop new technical and professional skillsets.
